Catching the Light: A Great Day Outdoors with Abel

I’ve always believed that the best photos don’t happen in a studio with big lights and a lot of pressure—they happen out in the world, where people can truly be themselves.

Lately, I’ve been focusing on making Photography Matters a space where everyone feels welcome, especially my friends in the neurodiverse and special needs community. Recently, I got to spend a beautiful San Diego afternoon with Abel, an aspiring model who is working on building his professional portfolio.

A Natural Vibe for a Natural Talent

When Abel and I talked about his session, we knew an outdoor shoot was the way to go. For many people, especially those who are autistic, the "closed-in" feeling of a studio can be a bit much. Being outside under the sun gave us room to breathe, move, and just enjoy the day.

Working with Abel was a total joy. He has this quiet, focused energy that translates so well to the camera. We didn't worry about "perfect" poses or "holding a smile." Instead, we just hung out, explored some cool backdrops, and let the light do the work.

Why This Session Was Special

Abel is on a mission to start his modeling career, and I’m so stoked that I could help him take these first steps. There’s a huge need for more neurodiverse faces in the fashion and modeling world, and seeing Abel’s confidence grow with every shutter click was the highlight of my week.

He’s got a look that is both striking and totally genuine. Whether he was leaning against a rustic fence or catching the direct sunlight, his personality really came through.

Let’s Make Something Beautiful Together

If you’re a parent or an aspiring talent looking for a San Diego photographer who values patience and a relaxed, sensory-friendly environment, I’d love to work with you. I don’t want to just take your picture; I want to help you tell your story and show the world what you're capable of.

Abel, thanks for being such an awesome collaborator. I can’t wait to see your face on a billboard soon!
