The Best Photos Are the Ones You Don’t Pose For

When Sam and Marta reached out to me for a family session, they had one request: they didn't want stiff, awkward poses. They wanted to capture the real energy of their family.

As a Carlsbad family photographer who specializes in an "unrushed" approach, this was music to my ears.

We decided to turn the photoshoot into a family field day, starting with the charm of Downtown Carlsbad and ending with the golden light at the beach. Here is a look at their beautiful session with their two boys, David and Daniel.

Part 1: Exploring History in Downtown Carlsbad

We started our session near the historical landmarks of Carlsbad Village. The architecture here provides such a textured, classic backdrop for portraits.

Instead of lining the family up against a wall, I encouraged them to walk, talk, and explore. David and Daniel were immediately curious about the surroundings. By letting the boys be themselves, we captured those genuine smiles that you just can't fake. The historical buildings gave us great lines and shadows, but the focus remained 100% on the connection between Sam, Marta, and the kids.

Part 2: Sand, Stones, and Racing the Tide

After the city vibes, we headed down to Carlsbad State Beach to let loose. This is where the magic really happened.

Coming from a background in surf photography, I love shooting near the ocean. The energy changes the moment kids hit the sand. David and Daniel didn't have to "sit still"—they ran.

  • Collecting Memories: We spent time hunting for the perfect stones and throwing them into the surf.

  • Racing the Waves: The boys had a blast running from the incoming tide, screaming with laughter.

  • Pure Joy: Capturing Daniel and David in mid-sprint allowed me to freeze that boundless childhood energy in a still frame.
