Sun, Sand, and Next Steps: Riley’s Carlsbad Senior Portrait Session

Graduating high school is a massive milestone, and there is no better way to celebrate it than with a golden-hour photoshoot right here in our own backyard. Recently, I had the absolute pleasure of capturing Riley’s senior portraits, and we couldn't have asked for a better afternoon exploring Downtown Carlsbad and the beach.

At Photography Matters, my goal for senior sessions is always the same: keep it relaxed, keep it fun, and let the senior’s true personality shine through. Riley made this incredibly easy.

A Carlsbad Local Through and Through

Riley is a proud senior at Carlsbad High School—representing the purple and black as a dedicated member of the dance team! But her athletic talents don't stop there. Growing up on the coast, she’s also been a fierce competitor in both water polo and beach volleyball.

Because the beach has been such a huge part of her life and her athletic journey, heading down to the Carlsbad shoreline for the second half of her shoot was a no-brainer. The natural light was perfect, and skipping the formal studio setup allowed us to capture some incredibly genuine, relaxed moments of her just walking the sand.

Next Stop: Long Beach State!

One of my favorite parts of doing senior portraits is hearing about what comes next. Riley is trading the Carlsbad purple for Long Beach State black and gold! She’s heading to LBSU to study Sports Nutrition, which is the absolute perfect fit for someone with her athletic background.

She brought along her Long Beach State sweater and pennant, and we had a blast incorporating them into the shoot. It’s always so fun to capture that excitement of college right on the horizon.

Making it a Family Affair

Senior year isn't just a big deal for the grads; it's a huge moment for the parents, too. I always encourage my seniors to bring their folks along, and I loved that we were able to grab a beautiful family shot of Riley and her parents with the ocean behind them. Those are the photos that end up framed on the mantel for years to come.

Riley, thank you so much for spending the afternoon with me. You have such a bright future ahead of you at Long Beach State, and I can't wait to see all the amazing things you accomplish in the world of sports nutrition!

Class of 2027—It’s Your Turn!
